How are we related? Let your family tree answer

Pick any two people in your tree and f-tree names the relationship, in English or Hindi, and shows the line between them.

The question every wedding asks

Who is whose cousin, and how many times removed? f-tree answers from your own tree, in one sentence, and then shows its working: every person the line passes through, each one a link you can click.

  • It walks marriages as well as blood. “My wife’s mother” and “my husband’s younger brother” are answers too.
  • It names the word, then shows the line. So you can check it against what the family says.
  • It admits when the record doesn’t connect two people. They may still be related; the file just doesn’t say how.
  • It answers in Hindi too. All 65 terms, chosen by side, link and birth order.

What “first cousin once removed” means

Cousins share an ancestor. The number says how far back that ancestor is, and “removed” counts the generations between the two of you.

RelationshipShared ancestorsGenerations apart
First cousinGrandparents you shareSame generation
Second cousinGreat-grandparents you shareSame generation
Third cousinGreat-great-grandparents you shareSame generation
First cousin once removedGrandparents of one of you, great-grandparents of the otherOne generation apart
First cousin twice removedGrandparents of one of you, great-great-grandparents of the otherTwo generations apart
Second cousin once removedGreat-grandparents of one of you, great-great-grandparents of the otherOne generation apart

The rule: count the generations from the shared ancestor down to whichever of you is nearer. Subtract one: that is the cousin number. Then the difference in generations between the two of you is how many times removed.

A first cousin’s child is your first cousin once removed, and so is your parent’s first cousin. Doing this by hand across a real family, with remarriages and half-siblings, is where people get stuck. That is the part f-tree does for you.

Why not a relationship calculator website?

It uses your real tree

A web calculator asks you to count generations yourself. f-tree already knows the family, so you pick two names.

It handles unknown people

An unnamed ancestor still connects branches. The line goes through them and is shown as unknown.

It stays private

Nothing about your family is typed into a website or sent anywhere.
